Communities of Leadership: Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited

The largest Indian company by market value on Forbes’ Global 2000 list is Reliance Industries Limited, at $69 billion.   Founded as part of the Reliance Group and led until 2002 by Dhirubai Ambani, it is now led by his son Mukesh.

Mukesh Ambani’s shareholding in Reliance makes him the fourth richest person in the world, according to Forbes; at $29 billion he ranks behind only Carlos Slim, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett.  Following the death of Dhirubai Ambani, leadership of the Reliance Group was split between Mukesh Ambani and his brother Anil.  Anil’s holdings in a different entitiy, now called the Reliance ADA Group, put him at number 36 on Forbes’s global rich list at $13.7 billion.

Reliance Industries claims to be the largest polyester yarn and fibre producer in the world.   It has integrated vertically to include substantial petrochemical operations, originally to feed its fiber production, and now claims to be in the top “five to ten” producers of petrochemical products.  Noting its value, the wealth it has generated for its shareholders, and its position in India and in world markets, I want to include it in our list of interesting communities of leadership.

I want to know more about Reliance from paying personal attention.  At this point, its statements about its “commitments” on the corporate website portray the intention to create a benevolent corporate culture.   Here are a few quotations.

“Reliance believes that any business conduct can be ethical only when it rests on the nine core values of Honesty, Integrity, Respect, Fairness, Purposefulness, Trust, Responsibility, Citizenship and Caring.”

“Growth is betting on our people.”

“Reliance builds with care a workplace that proactively fosters professional as well as personal growth. There is freedom to explore and learn; and there are opportunities that inspire initiative and intrinsic motivation. We believe that people must dream to achieve, that these dreams will drive the company’s excellence in all its businesses. Reliance thinks, behaves, lives and thrives with a global mindset, encouraging every employee to reach his / her full potential by availing opportunities that arise across the group.”

Quotations reported from founder Dhirubai Ambani:

“Growth has no limit at Reliance. I keep revising my vision. Only when you dream it you can do it.”

“Think big, think fast, think ahead. Ideas are no one’s monopoly.”

“We bet on people.”
