Communities of Leadership: Intel and Cisco

More on the Interesting Communities of Leadership.   I want to follow two companies who are leaders in providing the hardware for the emerging interconnected world of the 21st century – Intel and Cisco.

Intel, Paul Otellini, CEO has

  • Established itself as the world’s leading producer of microprocessors
  • Joined informally with Microsoft in the de facto “Wintel” partnership that has dominated the world of small computers.
  • Championed of Moore’s Law, enunciated by one of its founders, according to which the power of computing on a chip continues to explode.
  • Maintained leadership in microprocessors over a number of cycles and evolutions of computing
  • Been a leading, successful example of how to run an Open Innovation platform, as described at length by Henry Chesbrough in “Open Innovation”
  • Established a position as one of the world’s most valuable companies at $115 billion, according to the Forbes 2000 ranking.

Cisco, John Chambers, CEO, has

  • Established itself as the leading supplier of networking hardware,
  • Championed the idea that “the network is the platform”, now emphasising “the human network.”
  • Like Intel, managed to maintain and grow its leadership over a number of economic and technical cycles.
  • Established and operated a successful innovation strategy, largely by identifying, aquiring, and effectively integrating many small, innovative companies.
  • Created a position as one of the most valuable companies in the world at $141 billion in the Forbes survey.
