Communities of Leadership: Google

I suspect Google (Eric Schmidt, CEO; Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Co-founders, Presidents) would be on lots of people’s lists of Most Interesting Communities of Leadership.

My reasons to include them in my own list include:

  • They have risen meteorically to dominate the amazing world of search, and are thus one of the top handful of companies shaping the future of electronic communication and information management.
  • They dominate the world of online advertising.
  • They are one of those fabled stories of a technology startup that made good – on a massive scale.
  • They give an amazing amount of stuff away for free, including their famous search facilities, mail, storage, collaboration tools and productivity tools – and their Android mobile device operating system.
  • They are threatening Microsoft’s dominance in office automation tools.
  • Through their Android operating system, they are challenging for dominance  in the operating system space for mobile devices.
  • They famously give their staff “20% time” to invest 20% of their time in new and creative ideas of their own choosing.
  • They are much written about, including such books as The Google Story by David Vise and What Would Google Do by Jeff Jarvis.
  • They are at very close to the top of most people’s list of innovative companies (No. 2 behind Apple on Bloomberg  BusinessWeek’s list)
  • As a very young company (founded in 1998), they are the 17th most valuable company in the world, according to Forbes’s 2o10 ranking.
  • They are famous for their culture (e.g.”Do no evil” and “Ten Things Google Has Found To Be True.”)
